The Root Chakra is related to all your basic needs and physical necessities such as personal safety, food and shelter. This chakra is related to your connection with feeling grounded, your survival, security in life changes and personal growth. It is related to your foundations which support you. The Root Chakra represents your spirit of being, by managing basic survival skills. An imbalance here can cause discomfort in our physical existence, causing feelings of fear, anxiety, financial instability and perhaps even causing a cynical outlook. Practice mindfully working towards ridding any limiting beliefs about your place on the earth. Walk barefoot on the Earth, breathing in and allowing yourself to reconnect with its elements and nature. Hug a tree and feel the energy of the universe - yes really! Breathe in the abundance of joy and wellbeing you are creating. Throughout the day, be mindful of your connection to the Earth, bring your attention back into your body and sit in pure awareness. Breathe into the rootlock area of your Root Chakra and connect with your natural instincts. Sit with this for a few moments to fully absorb the sensations.
LOCATION AND ENERGY
The root chakra is located at the base of the spine, near the perineum and is the first chakra inside the human body. The root chakra represents our connection to the physical world, including our basic survival needs and instincts. The main aspects and characteristics associated with the root chakra include:

MEDITATION
Meditation for the Root Chakra, also known as Muladhara, is a powerful practice for grounding and balancing your foundational energy centre. During the meditation, we work to connect with the Earth element and foster a sense of stability, security and self-preservation.
Begin by finding a comfortable seated position, closing your eyes and taking deep breaths to centre yourself. Visualise a vibrant, glowing red energy at the base of your spine, representing the Root Chakra. Imagine roots extending from this point, reaching deep into the earth, anchoring you firmly.
During the practice, repeat affirmations that promote feelings of safety and strength. Use "I am" as the basis for your affirmation or mantra such as "I am safe" or "I am connected and grounded to the Earth." Focus on releasing any fears or insecurities that may be blocking the flow of energy in this chakra. With regular practice, Root Chakra meditation can help you feel more grounded, stable and confident, enabling you to face life's challenges with a solid foundation. Remember, consistency is the key and integrating this practice into your daily routine can yield transformative results.
Breathe in the abundance of joy and wellbeing you are creating. Throughout the day, be mindful of your connection to the Earth, bring your attention back into your body and sit in pure awareness. Sit with this for a few moments to fully absorb the sensations.

CRYSTALS AND GEMSTONES
As the root chakra is associated with grounding, stability and security, certain crystals resonate with its energy, helping to bring harmony and alignment. Some of my favourite crystals that resonate with the Root Chakra include Red Jasper, Hematite, Smoky Quartz and Black Tourmaline. These crystals are known for their grounding and stabilising properties.
To use them effectively, first cleanse the crystals to clear them of any negative or stagnant energies. My favourite methods are placing them in direct sunlight for about half an hour, basking in the moonlight overnight, smudging them or running them under fresh water.
Red Jasper: This stone is deeply connected to the root chakra and promotes grounding, stability and strength. It helps to enhance feelings of security and self-confidence.
Black Tourmaline: Known for its strong protective qualities, black tourmaline shields against negative energies and supports grounding and balance.
Hematite: Hematite is excellent for grounding and harmonising the mind, body, and spirit. It helps to keep you rooted and focused on the present moment.
Smoky Quartz: Smoky quartz absorbs and transmutes negative energies, promoting a sense of security and releasing fear and anxiety.
Bloodstone: Bloodstone is a powerful purifier that helps to cleanse and align the root chakra, enhancing courage and determination.
Obsidian: This stone aids in grounding and protection. It helps to clear emotional blockages, allowing for a more balanced flow of energy.
Garnet: Garnet supports the root chakra by promoting vitality, passion, and courage while grounding excessive energy.
Next, find a quiet space for your meditation or healing session. Hold the chosen crystal in your hand, close your eyes and take deep breaths. Visualise the red energy of the Root Chakra and imagine it aligning with the crystal's energy. You can also place the crystal on or near the area near the base of your spine during meditation to enhance the connection. Alternatively, carrying the crystal with you or keeping it in your living space can create a sense of grounding throughout the day. By incorporating these crystals into your practice, you can support the Root Chakra's balance, promoting feelings of security, stability, and strength in your life.
ASK ARCHANGEL ARIEL
Archangel Ariel is associated with the Root chakra and is regarded as the overseer of nature. Ariel meaning "The Lion or Lioness of God," signifies strength and protection, qualities that are closely linked to the grounding and stability represented by the Root chakra. As the Root chakra governs our sense of security and connection to the physical world, Archangel Ariel's energies are said to act as an anchor, helping us balance our spiritual and Earthly concerns. She supports us in meeting our basic needs, such as shelter, food, and other resources that sustain us in the physical realm.
Prayer to Archangel Ariel
“Beloved Archangel Ariel, thank you for surrounding me in your loving embrace. I am filled with courage to be myself and to live on this planet in a state of abundance and gratitude. I’m filled with your strength, and I trust that all of my needs are met. It is safe for me to receive your blessing. As I shine my light into the world, I inspire others to do the same. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.”
GROUNDING IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
When the root chakra is balanced, it helps us stay present in the moment, promoting a sense of safety and ease in our daily lives.
Imbalances in the root chakra can lead to feelings of insecurity, fear and the feelings of being 'too much in my head', which is a lack of grounding. On the other hand, a balanced root chakra fosters a strong foundation for personal growth, emotional resilience and spiritual development. Various healing practices such as
meditation, yoga, and energy work, can be used to balance and harmonise the root chakra.
GROUNDING PRACTICES: 10 SIMPLE PRACTICES
Grounding practices are beneficial for balancing and energising the root chakra. Some of my favourite grounding techniques are walking barefoot on the Earth. Connect with the Earth's energy by kicking off your shoes and standing barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, soil, rocks and pebbles. Swimming in fresh water or the ocean is also a great way to connect with the Earth and embrace grounding.
Spend time in nature where you are able to physically connect with the earth, water or plant life, especially tapping into the unique wisdom of the trees. Spend time outside doing some gardening, or simply sitting on the beach or grass with skin to ground contact to enhance your connection with the Earth.
Walk Barefoot
Take off your shoes and socks and walk directly on the ground, whether it's grass, sand, or soil. Rocks, pebbles, pavers and concrete will also radiate Mother Gaia’s energies, however if there is a plastic lining between the earth and the concrete, rocks or pavers, the negative ions will not pass through.
Gardening
Spend time working in the garden, digging in the soil, and connecting with the Earth's energy. Barefoot will radiate the earth’s energies, wearing shoes won’t do this. Unless you’re particularly sensitive, leave the gloves in the shed, put your hands in the dirt and have skin to plant contact.
Forest Bathing
Take a leisurely walk in the forest, immersing yourself in nature and soaking up the healing energy of the trees and plants. Hug a tree, lie in the forest naked – just kidding. The more skin to earth contact, the better the absorption of healing
energies.
Beach Time
Spend time at the beach, walking along the shore, swimming in the sea, and letting the sand and surf rejuvenate your body and mind. You will experience the same level of grounding when swimming in any natural body of water such as a creek, stream, rive or lake. The sad news is, your backyard swimming pool generally won’t radiate earth’s energies. Most pool builders place a synthetic or plastic lining between the earth and the concrete. This will prevent any grounding to occur whilst swimming in a man made pool.
Lie on the Grass
Find a comfortable spot in a park or your backyard, lie down on the grass, and simply relax, allowing yourself to connect with the Earth beneath you. The more skin – to – earth contact you have, the better!
Hiking
Explore natural hiking and trekking paths, breathing in the fresh air and feeling the earth beneath your feet as you trek through the wilderness.
Outdoor Yoga
Practice yoga or meditation outdoors, preferably on grass or soil, to deepen your connection with the Earth and enhance the benefits of your practice. An innovative approach to grounding during yoga is to use a fully grounded yoga mat.
Link: Grounding the Human Body during Yoga Exercise with a Grounded Yoga Mat Reduces Blood Viscosity. This study talks about how grounding reduces blood thickness and stickiness, which helps the heart to pump more blood and increase oxygen levels delivered to the tissues and organs. You may purchase a Yoga Grounding Mat through our shop here.
Campfire Gatherings
Gather around a campfire with friends and family, sharing stories and laughter while feeling the warmth of the fire and the grounding energy of the earth beneath you.
Grounding Mats or Sheets
For those who find it difficult to spend time outside, a grounding mats or sheet is a perfect remedy. A grounding mat can be used indoors to simulate the effects of earthing by connecting to the Earth's natural energy through the electrical grounding system of your home.
ESSENTIAL OILS
Sandalwood, Myrrh, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Vetiver, Cinnamon and Ginger are all essential oils that hold significant spiritual and healing properties, making them valuable tools for balancing and supporting the root chakra. When using these sacred oils, one can apply them topically, use them in aromatherapy, or incorporate them into meditation and healing practices to promote a balanced, grounded, and harmonious root chakra. Their unique properties can aid in emotional well-being, spiritual connection and overall healing of the root chakra energy centre.
My best choices for grounding essential oils are sandalwood, which is revered for its calming and sedative effects, aiding in grounding excessive root chakra issues. It can also enhance meditation practices, awakening life force energy and promoting emotional harmony. Myrrh which is known for its uplifting nature, promoting spiritual awareness and bridging the connection between the crown and root chakras. Its calming influence on the nervous system fosters feelings of safety. Frankincense, another favourite sacred oil, holds antidepressant and sedative qualities, similar to Sandalwood and Myrrh. It helps connect the crown and root chakras, fostering a sense of tranquillity. Finally but certainly not my last choice is Ylang Ylang, which cools down excessive root chakra issues, such as agitation and fear, by calming the nervous system and inducing relaxation.
YOGA PRACTICES
Yoga offers a variety of asanas (poses) that can help ground and balance the root chakra. These asanas focus on stability, strength and connection with the earth. Here are some yoga poses that can be beneficial for root chakra grounding - Tadasana (Mountain Pose), Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I Pose, Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II Pose, Balasana (Child's Pose), Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), Malasana (Garland Pose) and Vrksasana (Tree Pose).
It's not always necessary to spend an hour or more on your yoga practice, you can take these poses at any time during the day when it is convenient. When you take these poses, focus on the sensation of grounding and stability in each pose. Breathe deeply and visualise energy flowing from your root chakra into the earth, establishing a strong connection with the ground. These grounding yoga poses can help balance and activate the root chakra, fostering a sense of security, stability and overall well-being.
MINDFUL PRACTICES
Mindful practices can be effective in grounding and balancing the root chakra. Some of my favourite mindful activities are easy to incorporate into your everyday living to support the root chakra.
Body Scan Meditation:
Practice a body scan meditation, bringing your awareness to each part of your body, starting from the feet and moving upwards. This helps you connect with the physical sensations and anchor your presence in the
body.
Eating & Drinking Mindfully:
Hands up who gulps down their food or mindlessly drinks a cuppa while scrolling on their phone? Practice mindful eating by savouring each mouthful, noticing the flavours, smells, texture of the food and consider the nourishment your food provides. Give thanks and have gratitude for the sustenance the foods you eat offers as they are also able to strengthen the root chakra.
Drinking mindfully is also an excellent practice for grounding and bringing mindfulness to your practice. Whether it's water, tea, or any beverage for that matter, take a moment to appreciate the sustenance it provides. Savor the taste, feel the warmth or coolness and be fully present in the act of drinking. This practice fosters a deeper connection to the physical experience and promotes overall mindfulness.
GROUNDING VISUALISATION
Take a few moments to sit comfortably in a quiet space, head over heart, heart over hips. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to centre yourself. As you begin the grounding visualisation, imagine your body as the trunk of a beautiful strong tree, firmly rooted into the earth.
Visualise roots extending from the base of your spine, or the tailbone, growing deep into the Earth beneath you. Feel these roots spreading out and intermingling with the Earth's energy, establishing a strong and stable connection.
Sense the nourishing energy of the Earth being drawn up through your roots, flowing up your spine and filling your entire body with a sense of stability and security. Allow this energy to flow through you, grounding and anchoring you to the present moment.
As you inhale, imagine drawing in the stabilising energy of the Earth and as you exhale, release any excess energy or tension, allowing it to be absorbed and transformed by the Earth.
Continue to visualise this grounding connection for a few more breaths, feeling rooted, supported and at ease. When you are ready, slowly open your eyes, carrying the sense of grounding with you throughout your day.
By incorporating these mindful practices into your daily routine, you can nurture and balance your root chakra, fostering a strong foundation of stability, security and connection to the physical world.
Practice letting go by ridding limiting beliefs about your place on the earth. Walk barefoot on the earth, breathing in and allowing yourself to reconnect with the earth and nature. Hug a tree and feel the energy of the universe.
